A new biography of Sir Bartle Frere by D.P.O'Connor MA is now available. This does not replace the great work done by J. Martineau at the end of the 19th Century but - as the book is long out of print and hard to gain access to - does draw on archives in London. Washington and South Africa. The book also uses new sources to explain Frere's part in the Zulu war and advances some revisionist theories on the causes of the war.
